The Review: Remember The Simpsons, the show that used to be good back when Bill "Slick Willie" Clinton was president?
This map is based on the episode where Homer accidentally grows tomaccoes by combining tobacco with tomatoes
and "fertilizing" the mix with plutonium. And that's what you'll be doing in E-I-E-I-D'oh; fetch some stuff and get some sleep,
then find out what's been cooking over the night. Aliens spawn in every now and then to function as a nuisance
while all you want to do is tend to your field.
The map excels in visuals. There aren't really many Duke3D maps centering on a farmhouse, but Pepsodent has
done wonders with the theme. The author is one of those who're really good at using stock assets and turning them
into something new, but here the take feels a bit fresher than in something from, say, the Oostrum bros or MRCK.
Maybe it's because the author is a newcomer and feels more at ease with new features such as sloped sprites and
flipped textures? The intricate detailing also reminded me of Gambini the Great's works, especially the attention
given to home appliances and such. Details that caught my attention include a rotating magazine stand, overhead
power lines and the map's surroundings that utilize the potted plant sprite from Duke3D (but this I've seen used
before in a similar context, to be honest). There are also four layers of TROR in the farmhouse itself.
Gameplay is a bit gimmicky. You fetch the things you need to advance the "plot" and deal with respawning enemies
in between. It feels a bit forced, and the ending is just a crazy carnage with a boss fight. There's lots of open
space and not a lot of cover, so you need to remain mobile and actively look for a better position (there are only
a few) while also frantically searching for items. A bit of an unimaginative ending (which is basically half of
the map; the map is less than ten minutes long) to an otherwise imaginative map. The indoors are also noticeably cramped because of all the detailing,
but at least you won't be spending a lot of time in them (unlike in the author's previous map).
The map comes with a rather pleasant music track that gets plenty of mileage out of just a few beats.
