The Review: Duke ends up on a collision course with an alien craft over a scorching
desert. In the mix are strange shadow creatures that lurk in the darkest corners of the map. From the
beginning the map's layout, or intended progression, seems clear enough; to first make it through the
downed alien craft, then somehow get to the other side of the wide open area in front of you. In practice
things aren't quite so simple, as the map involves quite a lot, too much in fact, of zigzagging back
and forth. (For one, when you leave the craft for the first time, you shouldn't have to return there.)
The alien craft itself is filled with all kinds of interesting little gadgets and details. It's hard to be
original with theme, as the organic alien textures in Duke3D are often quite a bore, but Mike manages
to keep things visually interesting. Too bad the ship is too small and cluttered, causing Duke to
constantly hit walls and objects. There are also some "BobSP" type of faux-pickable objects that are a bit
janky: I picked the second one up without noticing it and spent a bit of time wandering around. But I did
like the idea with the alien hand.
Aside from all the needless back and forth, I liked the idea of systematically pushing through obstacles
and opening up routes as you make your way to the other side of the open area. There's also a cool little
stunt you can pull off with a tripmine (and a way to get around it if you don't know how). The weird shadow
creatures first seem like random decorations but then become a bigger gameplay "thing" toward the end. At
one point near the end you'll have a bunch of basically invisible drones chasing you; a bit annoying at
first, but it's just a matter of using your bombs against them. The map doesn't have a large monster count,
but it never feels easy thanks to good monster placement. Interestingly, you'll get the pistol only very late
in the map, and the map is "canonically" correct in that there are no Pig Cops (they're mutated LAPD, after
all).
Design is good throughout with stark contrasts between light and dark in the open area. Mike has also
always been good with vehicles, and there are some nice-looking plants as well. The map comes with a custom
skybox that fits the theme; but it should have replaced the dawn/dusk sky texture (tile 94) so that that
sky texture would appear as a failsafe or if you just don't want to use the custom skybox. There's also
a new music track, giving the map a threatening undertone (which fits in nicely with the shadow creatures).
Conclusion: Mike Norvak has been a part of the community for a long time, but Sunstroke is actually only his third solo usermap release (check his previous map here). It's filled with interesting details, the sun-baked desert makes good use of shadows, and it's got some good gameplay elements as well. Gameplay-wise there are some issues with progression; the map could use more clarity with respect to navigation.
