Cliffs of Dover | Single/Multi | Author: Merlijn van Oostrum | Download
The Review: In a truly New Age type of twist, the aliens are after the Stonehenge. The map takes place around the White Cliffs
of Dover, almost definitely making this the first map set at the site. The author calls it a spiritual successor to Clear the Coast, a map released a long long ago in a place far far away.
You've got plenty of wide-open spaces, caves, a light house, some alien-infested bunkers and more. The map makes great use of new features like flipped textures; seriously, who's
better equipped to utilize stuff like that than guys like the Oostrum bros, MRCK and others who love to experiment with old textures, figuring
out novel ways to make something new out of them? There's also ample use of colored lighting and some lovely sloped shadows. The alien-infested
bunker has got a few operable cannons and other interesting stuff, including a traversable collapsed submarine within a huge cavern. The penultimate
segment takes place outdoors where an otherwise serene country landscape has an ominous ambience to it. The finale then follows, and it's a sight
to behold, involving alien tractor beams and the Stonehenge itself - high up above the clouds.
The map's gameplay is a rather typical hunt for keys, but it does play like a grand adventure where Duke traverses collapsed submarines, alien
bases and spaceships, the countryside, a small village and whatnot. Combat is balanced and quite predictable. There's no excess reliance on respawns
- at least aside from the usual cliche of Troopers being served as respawning fodder to be fed to your mighty pistol. Health is occasionally scarce,
and there's one bit where you face two Battlelords without much cover, but take a few steps back and watch them fall of the White Cliffs. The author
has also supplied new custom music, an atmospheric guitar track that fits the map's tone and sights well. Oh, and there's a cool little reference
to yours truly as well:)
